Shuraku is Vancouver’s Best Japanese Food Experience
Shuraku has been around for a while now. It has survived the test of time, as far as good restaurants in Vancouver are concerned, and while many of its staff see a revolving door, the head Chef and most of his kitchen team continue to greet customers with a smile as if it is opening week!
The menu offers a hearty but not overwhelming selection of typical Japanese Izakaya fair, with atypical maki rolls that, as far as I have experienced, have yet to be beaten. There is also a regularly changing hot sheet of specials, which elevates Shuraku to the category of Bistro. While favorites often find their way back onto this flyer, chef Masahiro Omori continually experiments. He is clearly inspired by the distinction of the four seasons, as well as by the charismatic nightlife that helps the Granville core retain some mystery and suspense. The food has character, and variety, and something to offer every mood. I’ve gone in with a group of clients or out of town friends, and have been able to show off elegant meals. I’ve also gone in on one of those dark, depressing November Saturdays, alone and wet, and been comforted by the simple ramen noodles.
There is care here that may seem odd or corny in Vancouver’s often pre-occupied “self-culture”, but trust that it is sincere and you find yourself seeking a reunion.
